Sacrament of Holy Communion (Eucharist)
The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament and a sacrifice. In the Holy Eucharist, under the appearances of bread and wine, the Lord Christ is contained, offered, and received.
Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist in this way: He took bread, blessed and broke it, and giving it to His apostles, said: "Take and eat; this is My body"; then He took a cup of wine, blessed it, and giving it to them, said: "All of you drink of this; for this is My blood of the new covenant which is being shed for many unto the forgiveness of sins"; finally, He gave His apostles the commission: "Do this in remembrance of Me."
I am the living bread that has come down from heaven. If anyone eat of this bread he shall live forever. (John 6:51-52)
In the Latin Rite, Baptized Children having reached the age of seven years, after completing the necessary preparation and receiving the Sacrament of Penance, are permitted to receive their First Holy Communion. Please contact the Parish Directress of Religious Education, Dr. Mary Ann Chiodo (910) 897-4565
Sacrament of Penance
Penance is the sacrament by which sins committed after Baptism are forgiven through the absolution of the priest. The priest has the power to forgive sins from Jesus Christ, who said to His apostles and to their successors in the priesthood: "Receive the Holy Ghost; whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained." (John 20:22-23)
In addition to the regularly scheduled times for the Sacrament of Penance (Saturdays at 4:30p.m. and Wednesdays at 6:00p.m.), Father is usually available upon request for individual confessions. During the Season of Lent, several priests will assist, on an evening announced ahead of time, in hearing the confessions of parishioners.
Sacrament of Extreme Unction
Extreme Unction (Anointing of the Sick) is the sacrament which, through the anointing with blessed oil by the priest, and through his prayer, gives health and strength to the soul and sometimes to the body when either; 1. we are in danger of death through illness, accident, or old age or; 2. we suffer some other illness, chronic or acute, and desire the healing of our Lord.
Is any one among you sick? Let him bring in the priests of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick persons. (James 5:14)
Please call the office if you need to be anointed.
